Covid 19 and Student Accommodation

The current situation has resulted in major changes in the University and student accommodation sector, and challenges for students across the UK, as they consider their next steps regarding accommodation for this year, and next.

If you are concerned about your accommodation, or find yourself in a situation where you need to leave your accommodation, change your arrival date or new accommodation contract, there are a number of things you can do. The first is to remain calm, the Government has put a number of measures in place to support people living in rental accommodation.

Next Steps:

1. Find out what the situation is at your University

Check the website of your University’s student accommodation office to confirm exactly what the current situation is at your university and view their updates and frequently asked question sections.

If you feel you need more information, contact details for accommodation offices can be found on the ‘contact us’ page on your University Studentpad site, visit Studentpad.co.uk to locate the Studentpad site for your University or click here. If you can’t find the answer on the University website you may find it is better to email the accommodation office than try to call them.

2. Review your finances

Review your current financial situation and then speak to your landlord. If you are struggling to pay your rent, they may be able to help. Remember, where possible the government is encouraging everyone to pay rent as usual and work together to come up with a rent payment scheme if necessary.

3. What help is there?

The government has brought in new legislation to protect private renters from eviction, they want to ensure no one is forced out of their home.

The new three month mortgage payment holiday is also extended to Buy to Let landlords. This may mean your landlords can be more flexible. Visit the update below to find out more:

Safety and Security

In addition to the above, landlords are still responsible for ensuring that properties meet the required standards and that urgent, essential repairs are still made. Contact your landlord or student accommodation offices if you need help with a repair.

If you are leaving your student accommodation to go home, remember basic security and fire safety. Lock doors and windows and ensure all electrical appliances are switched off. Visit the NUS site for more advice.

Finally, remember to Stay Safe

It is really important to follow the Government guidance on virus hygiene and social distancing to keep yourself, and others safe.
